Gardening Surprises

Image
This morning there has been a small reprieve from the heatwave with thunderstorms getting ready to arrive. I had time to get into my garden and tie up my tomatoes, remove dead leaves and play in the dirt.  My garden is not yet plentiful.  It has either been battered by torrential rain or bitch slapped with the sun.  I have a few tomato blossoms, but some have whither and dried up in the heat.  My zucchini blossoms went from 1 to 9 overnight. That was surprising.  My red lettuce is thriving, while my green lettuce is struggling to survive. My pepper and onions are still there, but I haven't seen much growth from them in 2 weeks.  My parsley exploded out of my herb bed into the other herb bed, while my lemon thyme and sage look the same as they did when I planted them a month ago.  My basil looks beautiful and large.  I wish I had a good way to preserve it.  Looks like everything we eat this week will be seasoned with basil.  But it has gr...

Locked down in a Heatwave

Image
I was crawling the walls in April to get outside to sunshine. Two months later, I find myself trying to stay cool in a heatwave along with my other northeast Ohio friends. When we camping the third weekend in July the heatwave began.  Thankful for our window air conditioner, the humidity made the air so think it was chewy.  I managed to stay relatively cool and remembered our days without air conditioning.  I enjoy the cool air, but it is so loud that to hear the television, I have to turn it off the air conditioner. The unit is in the living room so my bedroom can become a furnace after day 4 of a heatwave.  The first 4 days, I can mange a intricate dance of closing curtains, the whole house fan and strategic standing fan placement.  Typically, we have retreated to the lower level during a heat wave, but my youngest has moved in after obtaining her Master's Degree until she begins her career as an epidemiologist.  The current political climate...

Legend-ary Travels: The Unexpected

Image
Bruce and I were ready to unwind after a busy couple weeks.  Though it seems we camp a lot (and we due in the Spring and Summer). Camping offers us a great respite from business calls and paperwork, as well as household chores and projects.  After several days of heavy rain and a tornado warning, the weather had settled and we were packed and headed out the door by 2 p.m.  As much as I want to think it is a turn key operation, I don't think we will ever fully be able to have that experience.  Tying everything up with the business with a nice neat bow never happens.  The calls always come in between noon and 3 as we are preparing to leave, but I want to make notes when a call comes in so we don't forget about it upon our return.  It is purely a me thing.  I am that person who wants the house completely clean and laundry done before I head out on a trip. As Bruce made a left turn onto Rt. 87, I questioned whether he was going the right way.  ...

Legend-ary Travels: Kelley's Island State Park

Image
Kelley's Island State Park Campground Each summer we go on around 12 camping trips in our travel trailer. Nine or ten trips are 3 night trips to local Ohio State Parks and the others are typically longer trips and are generally out of state. Last year we traveled to Tennessee and New York. This summer we plan to travel to the Allegheny Forest in Pennsylvania and a week long trip to Sherman City Acres in Michigan. This summer I decided to change up our State Park locations a bit and try some Ohio State Parks that we have never been. This summer we will be visiting Alum Creek State Park, East Harbor State Park, Kelly’s Island State Park and Maumee Bay State Park.  At the time of this posting, it is now June and we have stayed at Alum Creek State Park in May. I can barely count this as a stay as we stayed here for my daughter’s college graduation and were offsite the entire weekend except to sleep. On top of that it rained the entire weekend and we likely would not...
